During a press dinner on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump made headlines once again—this time for refusing to rule out deploying active-duty U.S. Marines to Los Angeles in response to the city’s ongoing immigration protests.
While 2,000 National Guard troops had already been sent under Title 10 authority, bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom, Trump took it a step further. When asked if he’d consider sending in the military, he replied:
“If things continue like this, all options are on the table. We will restore order.”
The comment immediately stirred outrage from state officials and civil rights groups, many of whom warned that introducing the U.S. military into domestic protests would escalate tensions and potentially violate long-standing norms separating military and civilian law enforcement.
Critics argue this move blurs the lines between security and suppression. Supporters say it’s about protecting federal agents and property.
Whether or not Marines are actually sent, the threat alone marks a dangerous shift—and a warning to any city that resists federal immigration crackdowns.
