On June 1, 2025, a peaceful solidarity walk in Boulder, Colorado, turned into a scene of chaos when a man attacked participants with firebombs and a makeshift flamethrower. The event, organized by the local chapter of “Run for Their Lives,” aimed to support hostages held in Gaza. The attacker, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, injured 16 people, including himself. Authorities have charged him with multiple counts, including attempted murder and federal hate crimes.
What Happened?
Around 1:26 p.m., as the walk proceeded through Pearl Street Mall, Soliman allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the crowd and used a homemade flamethrower. Witnesses reported hearing him shout phrases like “End Zionist” and “Free Palestine” during the attack. Several victims suffered burns, with six requiring hospitalization. Among the injured was an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor.
Legal Actions
Soliman faces 42 state felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder and assault. He has also been charged federally for hate crimes. During his court appearance, he was seen with bandages covering his ears, indicating injuries sustained during the incident. His bail is set at $10 million.
Community and Political Response
The attack has been widely condemned as an act of antisemitism. Colorado Governor Jared Polis stated, “Hate is unacceptable in our Colorado for all.” President Donald Trump announced plans to deport Soliman and cited the incident as a reason for implementing a new travel ban affecting 12 countries.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward. The community is organizing a candlelight vigil to honor the victims and promote unity against hate.
